Dr. Glenn Dubroc provides shares with residents and younger members, Give Me More YOLO and a Lot Less FOMO (1.25 CE). The prevailing rage in orthodontics is growth, growth, and more growth. Get more patients, see more patients, add more staff, add more locations. But what is the reality behind the curtains of that approach? Whom does this business model really benefit? What impact does it have on an orthodontist’s professional and personal life? How does this incessant pursuit of a bigger orthodontic practice all end? What it HAS done is create too much competition.

Largely because of the hype behind monster practices, residents and young orthodontists are inclined to believe it must be the best way to achieve satisfaction and financial success in orthodontics. The FOMO is tangible and real. But too many young doctors who pursue the large practice model quickly find themselves feeling overwhelmed, stressed, burned out, and lacking the balance they thought they could enjoy.

Dr. Glenn Dubroc graduated from LSU’s orthodontic residency in 1991. He immediately opened a start-up practice with one location, two chairs, and one assistant. He cultivated and nurtured a 3 ½ day/week, 28 clinical hours/week, 20 – 25 patients per day practice until it became immensely profitable (79% profitability, 21% overhead) and then coasted to retirement at the age of 49, finishing his career in the same location and the same two-chair office.

Some make claims that this type of practice, the so-called boutique practice, is from another era and now a dinosaur. Dr. Dubroc remains in contact with former residents he taught, as well as with other orthodontists who learned of his business model and adapted their practices to mimic this model. These doctors are quietly, without much fanfare, amassing phenomenally successful practices, while enjoying a manageable patient load and a work-life balance of which they always dreamed. In many cases, they earn more net income than practices double or triple their size. They’ve found their YOLO and conquered the FOMO.
