2021 Edward H. Angle Award Lecture; Biomechanics and Force Delivery Systems: Wires to Screws to Plastics

Jun 25, 2021 10:45am ‐ Jun 25, 2021 11:30am

Identification: AS21B06

In the last two decades, clinical orthodontic practice has changed tremendously with the introduction of skeletal anchorage miniscrews and aligners. Orthodontic tooth movement takes place in response to stresses placed on periodontium with applied force system. This presentation will discuss similarities and limitations of three different appliance systems for managing complex malocclusions.

Learning Objectives:

  • Evaluate advantages and limitations of treatment with braces, mini screws and aligners.
  • Recognize common side effects and how to minimize them.
  • Apply appropriate force system for various tooth movements.

Applying Science to Aligner Mechanics and Design

Jun 25, 2021 10:45am ‐ Jun 25, 2021 11:30am

Identification: AS21B07

As aligners have increased in use for orthodontic tooth movement, clinicians have made decisions about how to plan tooth movement based primarily on their own experience, or the experience of others. This presentation will add science to the equation in order to help the clinician understand how differences in aligner trim margin and material selection may impact the forces and moments delivered to teeth. Novel research will be shared that will help practitioners make evidence-based decisions about aligner fabrication to optimized clinical care and efficiency.

Learning Objectives:

  • Better understand the current state of knowledge regarding the biomechanics of aligner tooth movement.
  • Appreciate the impact of the aligner trim design on the delivery of force to the tooth.
  • Improve your aligner design strategies to maximize efficiency of tooth movement.

Change is always daunting but bringing in a new technology to the orthodontic office presents an specific set of issues that must be considered. How can we decide whether a new tool should be implemented or is something to pass on? Is the juice worth the squeeze? We will discuss what goes into the decision to bring a new technology into the office and how to go about bringing this new tool to your team.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand what drives us to bring new tools into the office.
  • Make a determination as to whether a new technology will be beneficial.
  • Review real life examples of technologies that have been implemented successfully.

The Art and Science of Laser Orthodontics

Jun 25, 2021 12:30pm ‐ Jun 25, 2021 12:55pm

Identification: AS21B08

You are Artists and Scientists! Orthodontic finishing is more than just lining up the teeth and creating a beautiful smile. Many times after treatment the patient's gingival architecture needs to be addressed. If an orthodontist doesn't do this procedure, over 90% of the patients referred out to have it done never follow through. This lecture is designed to give you confidence in the art and science of laser use in our practices and take our finishes to another level by paying attention to the last detail of finishing.

Learning Objectives:

  • Diagnose, identify and execute precision laser use to expose cuspids, eliminate over grown tissue and cosmetic shaping of gingival margins.
  • Execute numbing procedures, that don't involve a shot, and what after care looks like for each patient.
  • Gain confidence in buying the right laser that fits practice needs.
