This program, sponsored by the AAO Insurance Company (RRG), will discuss the development of malpractice claims from the activity performed by the orthodontic staff. From communication, to patient records, to performing clinical procedures, staff is involved with patients and treatment. Staff can cause and/or prevent malpractice claims against the orthodontist. Attend this program to learn about current claims and how to prevent them. Elizabeth Franklin, claims manager, and Jessica Kaesberg, claims representative for AAOIC will summarize real malpractice claims that have been impacted by orthodontic staff. They will discuss staff behavior and practice activity that can minimize or preclude the development of a claim. There will be a Q&A session to discuss questions about the program material or any office problems.

Orthodontic technology continues to evolve to offer patients ever more esthetic options for completing their orthodontic treatment. Many providers may come to feel like we are caught in an "arms race" with our patients' esthetic demands escalating with every new technology that we offer to keep their treatment hidden from the world. These treatment modalities share some important similarities, and this patient population is unique. I will review some of the mechanical challenges of lingual orthodontics and some of the patient psychology that can make lingual orthodontics particularly challenging for providers.

When I was your age... is a centuries old statement that we've all heard and made fun of when we were the younger generation. But if this is the extent of the conversation then both older and newer generations miss the opportunities available when neither stops to listen and absorb the truths each has to offer the other. No matter which side of the gap you look out onto, there are lessons to learn and to teach and ultimately contribute to the happiness and growth of all.

The timing of treatment for different malocclusions remains a controversial clinical issue despite the considerable volume of literature on this topic over the past years. Clinical decisions such as the optimal time to start treatment are inevitably difficult, especially in preadolescents, because of the variability between patients, the uncertainty about growth, risk of trauma, psychological needs and treatment response. The purpose of my presentation will be to show when, why and how preadolescence orthodontics should be performed.

Congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors are not an uncommon finding among the population. When these are discovered in growing adolescent patients desiring orthodontic treatment, two primary treatment options are available – canine substitution or dental implant restorations. Both are viable options. The problem with dental implants in growing adolescents is that they do not continue to erupt with the dentition and become submerged relative to the dentition, resulting in esthetic consequences.
Dr. Cope will introduce the concept of placing a miniscrew implant as a temporary replacement for a missing maxillary lateral incisor that he first treatment planned on a patient in 2003. Since then, he has further developed and refined the technique. The presentation will include the historical development, rationale, clinical protocol, and long-term results of temporary replacement of lateral incisors with miniscrew implants, as well as comparison with other treatment options.
