2019 Webinar - Management of the Carriere Motion Appliance Prior to Treatment with Fixed Appliances or Clear Aligners

Nov 5, 2019 7:30pm ‐ Nov 5, 2019 8:45pm

The Carriere Motion appliance is an auxiliary appliance system that focuses on correcting the sagittal discrepancy in the initial stages of treatment. Used to correct both Class II and Class III malocclusions, this compliance-based treatment modality is effective in both growing and non-growing patients. With experience, associated side effects can be anticipated and prevented. This lecture will focus on the management of the Carriere Motion Appliance in a private practice environment in conjunction with rapid maxillary expansion, full fixed appliances, and clear aligner treatment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Evaluate patients for treatment with the Carriere Motion Appliance.
  • Comprehend the protocol for successful treatment with the Carriere Motion Appliance.
  • Recognize and prevent associated side effects of treatment with the Carriere Motion Appliance.

Dr. Laurie McNamara McClatchey attended The University of Michigan for dental school and her Graduate Orthodontic education. Dr. McNamara splits her time professionally between private practice and teaching. Dr. McNamara is a part-time faculty member in the Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Michigan. Her teaching responsibilities include overseeing the clinical care provided by orthodontic residents along with her duties as course director of two didactic classes, providing an education in advanced techniques in orthodontics to both dental students and graduate orthodontic residents. Additionally, she has multiple publications and has lectured to dental professionals both nationally and internationally.

What I Wish I Knew Sooner

May 3, 2020 11:40am ‐ May 3, 2020 12:45pm

Bill Proffit playfully said, that “No one knows more than a second-year orthodontic resident.” He was alluding to the overconfidence of a new orthodontist who has yet to experience the struggles of private practice. Often, I wish that I could go back in time and speak to my younger self so that I could share the valuable experiences I eventually learned through trial and error; if only I knew then what I know now. This heart-felt presentation will be a journey of my personal and professional growth, from an overconfident resident to a humbled orthodontist. This lecture will go deeper into topics discussed at this past GORP meeting.

Learning Objectives:

  • Change your focus from collection goals to treatment goals.
  • Reevaluate the benefits of Phase I treatment.
  • Discover the power of humility in growing your practice correctly.
