Short-term effects of mechanical loading on the transdifferentiation of condylar chondrocytes

May 21, 2022 1:20pm ‐ May 21, 2022 1:40pm

Various studies have shown that treatments can alter condylar growth direction. While the structural adaptations are now well established, the cellular process controlling these changes is not well understood. It was recently discovered that transdifferentiation of chondrocytes into bone cells explains most of the prenatal and early postnatal condylar growth that occurs; its role during later postnatal growth remains unknown. This presentation will outline the effects of mechanical loading on chondrocyte-derived osteogenesis during later postnatal condylar growth using a short-term mandibular laterotrusion model.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe endochondral ossification and cell transdifferentiation as it relates to condylar growth.
  • Explain the gross, radiographic, and histologic results of laterotrusion on the mandible.
  • Discuss the short-term cellular changes that occur during structural adaptation of the condyle.

Mastering 3D Printed Indirect Bonding Trays

May 21, 2022 1:30pm ‐ May 21, 2022 1:50pm

In this session, Dr. Lisa Alvetro will discuss what are the key factors that will guarantee success implementing the digital workflow for 3D printing indirect bonding trays in the clinical practice. Dr. Alvetro will discuss aspects such as overall workflow administration and delegation, characteristics that the 3D printer should have in order to produce trays in-house, material properties needed of the end printed appliance and important considerations when managing the post-processing protocol and preparing for the patient appointment.

Early Treatment of Maxillary Transverse Deficiency with TADs

May 21, 2022 1:35pm ‐ May 21, 2022 2:05pm

Maxillary expansion with traditional rapid palatal expansion appliances is limited to treatment of maxillary deficiencies before the pubertal growth spurt. Treatment with tooth-borne expansion appliances also has side effects such as tipping and extrusion of anchorage teeth. The speaker will introduce the use of bone-borne expansion appliance for maxillary expansion which may expand the scope of orthopedic treatment in young adults.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the limitations in maxillary expansion with tooth-borne expansion appliance.
  • Identify the use of various designs of bone-borne expansion appliances in treatment of maxillary deficiencies in young adults with the help of TADs.
  • Evaluate when to use tooth-borne and bone-borne expanders in their practice.

Management of Class III Malocclusion with Facemask & Palatal Expansion: The Importance of Mandibular Rotation

May 21, 2022 1:35pm ‐ May 21, 2022 2:05pm

The Class III malocclusion presents at least five different phenotypes characterized by varying degrees of maxillary and mandibular dysplasia. Facemask/palatal expansion therapy has been the most common and predictable treatment for young growing patients and is characterized by forward and downward movement of the maxilla, and clockwise rotation of the mandible. Dr. Turley will discuss the indication for and importance of this mandibular movement in early Class III treatment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the components of Class III correction with palatal expansion/facemask therapy.
  • Distinguish cases where clockwise rotation of the mandible is a positive effect of treatment.
  • Identify cases where clockwise mandibular rotation should be controlled.

Correction of Anterior Open Bite with Aligners Using Planned Posterior Intrusion

May 21, 2022 1:35pm ‐ May 21, 2022 2:05pm

Aligner therapy often results in bite-deepening, which is helpful in patients with anterior openbite. Some practitioners are programming in posterior intrusion to assist with anterior openbite correction. Dr. Huang will review some of the literature associated with aligner therapy for anterior openbite patients, and describe a recent study evaluating the effect of planned posterior intrusion.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize the advantages of treating anterior openbite patients with aligners.
  • Understand the tooth movements that occur when aligners are used to treat anterior openbite.
  • Compare the differences in tooth movement when aligners do and do not have planned posterior intrusion.

Investigating PRG4 re-expression as a treatment for TMJ degenerative diseases

May 21, 2022 1:40pm ‐ May 21, 2022 2:00pm

Proteoglycan 4 (PRG4, also known as lubricin) is a mucin-like glycoprotein that contributes to the lubrication of cartilage surfaces. PRG4 is present in the TMJ and plays an essential role in its maintenance. However, there are few studies regarding biomechanical characterization of PRG4-deficient TMJ, which is critical to fully characterize the extent of TMJ degeneration, as is understanding the effect of restoring PRG4 expression on TMJ integrity. This presentation will discuss the role PRG4 plays in TMD and the effects of PRG4 re-expression on TMJ cartilage degeneration in PRG4 deficient mice.

Learning Objectives:

  • To demonstrate the role of PRG4 expression in TMD through characterization of TMJ cartilage at various stages of disease.
  • To determine effects of restoration of PRG4 gene function in PRG4 deficient mice on TMJ cartilage degeneration.
  • To evaluate the biomechanical changes of cartilage in TMJ with or without PRG4 gene function.

Treatment of white spot lesions with MI paste plus, with and without microabrasion: a split-mouth, randomized clinical trial

May 21, 2022 2:00pm ‐ May 21, 2022 2:20pm

White spot lesions are a common esthetic issue we face in dentistry, affecting many patients, especially those receiving orthodontic treatment. Treatment strategies tend to involve restorative techniques, which involves removal of tooth structure and possible need for their future replacement. This presentation explores the results of a split-mouth clinical trial which studied the effectiveness of a less invasive strategy to treat white spot lesions: the usage of MI Paste Plus, with and without microabrasion.

Learning Objectives:

  • To understand the etiology, clinical presentation, prevalence, and structural aspects of white spot lesions.
  • To describe the existing white spot lesion treatment options available and their respective advantages of disadvantages.
  • To identify a less invasive white spot lesion treatment option through the usage of MI Paste Plus, with and without microabrasion, and when to implement it.
