Several treatment approaches are being used for the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), including among others continuous positive airway pressure, intraoral appliances for mandibular advancement, conventional or surgically-assisted maxillary expansion, and surgical maxillomandibular advancement. This lecture summarizes existing evidence from high quality clinical trials on humans using a systematic review & network meta-analysis framework to assess the comparative effectiveness of the various treatment approaches of OSA.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has become the primary reason to perform an adenotonsillectomy (T&A) in children. This lecture will present a practical approach to the management of pediatric OSA. Recently, there have been published and updated clinical practice guidelines and clinical trials on the diagnosis, surgical indications and perioperative management of children with OSA. The lecture will use an evidence based approach to answer practical dilemmas that face clinicians such as: who needs polysomnography? What are the criteria for overnight observation? And, how do you manage a child with persistent OSA after T&A?

The American Dental Association, the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine have published guidelines and policies that describe the role and responsibilities of dentists in managing sleep disordered breathing (SDB). Dental providers who wish to treat such patients in their practices should be knowledgeable about these recommendations and recognize that their responsibilities go beyond simply taking impressions and delivering an oral appliance. Orthodontists have skills that are particularly suited to managing patients with SDB.

While orthodontistists are uniquely poised to incorportate sleep into orthodontic practices, there are signficant challenges in actually doing so. The Carriere Motion appliance is an auxiliary appliance system that focuses on correcting the sagittal discrepancy in the initial stages of treatment. Used to correct both Class II and Class III malocclusions, this compliance-based treatment modality is effective in both growing and non-growing patients. With experience, associated side effects can be anticipated and prevented. This lecture will focus on the management of the Carriere Motion Appliance in a private practice environment in conjunction with rapid maxillary expansion, full fixed appliances, and clear aligner treatment.

Clear aligners are an incredibly effective appliance system when the treating doctor utilizes proper evaluation of appropriate records and judgment during the diagnostic phase of treatment.

The clear aligner segment in the industry is experiencing a proliferation of new products from which to choose. The products range from full service to DIY to online products that provide little or no input from a licensed dental professional. This webinar will review the current state of clear aligner products with a focus on the essential elements required to effectively move teeth. Managing the vertical dimension during orthodontic treatment remains a challenge to the treating orthodontist, despite the many advances in techniques and appliances being used. Clear aligner therapy appears to help control, as well as aid in, opening up deep bite malocclusions with consistency, mostly due to the occlusal coverage by the aligners. Most orthodontists have tackled the dilemma of treating patients missing one or both maxillary lateral incisors. The compromise requirement depends on the choice of treatment. This program will provide a review of the current proposed forms of treatment for cases missing one or both maxillary lateral incisors and discuss challenges to find the appropriate treatment alternatives.
