A 22 year-old patient presents to you seeking correction of a bilateral posterior cross bite secondary to a constricted maxilla. How would you proceed? Would you attempt dental expansion, RPE (Rapid Palatal Expansion), MARPE (Mini-screw Assisted Rapid Palatal expansion), SARME (Surgically-Assisted Rapid Maxillary Expansion), or perhaps MPMO (Multiple Piece Maxillary Osteotomy)? This case-based clinical lecture will review the literature and present current research data from the University of Iowa to help you make this decision.
Learning Objectives:
Understand the considerations for choosing the appropriate treatment approach for maxillary expansion in non-growing individuals.
Understand the limitations of each treatment approach.
Evaluate the University of Iowa laboratory technique for manufacture of MARPE appliances.
