Fixed appliance orthodontic treatment using the continuous archwire philosophy remains to this day the gold standard for correcting malocclusions. However, it unfortunately drives a mindset amongst orthodontists of relying on the “appliance to do the thinking” in order to move teeth to their target position. Such practice is commonly fraught with spurious tooth movement resulting in delayed treatment and more importantly placing the patient at risk. Anticipatory orthodontics is an approach to care that Dr. Sachdeva developed based upon sound biomechanical principles to assess the risk associated with the use of continuous archwires in correcting malocclusions. Clinical patient histories will be used to discuss Anticipatory orthodontics with the objective of maximizing safe therapeutic practices.
After this lecture you will be able to:
Describe the principles and practice of anticipatory orthodontics to minimize and manage risk and side effects resulting from the use of continuous archwire therapy.
