2019 Annual Session Conference

Early Class III Treatment with Palatal Expansion and a Custom Made Protraction Facemask

May 6, 2019 2:45pm ‐ May 6, 2019 3:15pm

Early Class III treatment with palatal expansion and protraction facemask has become the gold standard in orthodontics. What was once one of the most difficult challenges for the orthodontist is now the most predictable of early treatment protocols. Although adjunctive procedures such as alternating palatal expansion and constriction, TAD’s supported palatal expansion, or miniplates with Class III elastics have been suggested to increase the success of treatment, the protocol described in this lecture will be successful in the majority of cases. The fabrication of a custom made facemask and full time wear at the beginning will be described and illustrated with treated cases.

Learning Objectives:

  • Plan step by step the use of palatal expansion and a custom protraction facemask for Class III correction.
  • Identify the mechanisms by which a developing Class III malocclusion is corrected.
  • Fabricate a custom protraction face mask.
