Milo Hellman Research Award: In vitro Evaluation of Antimicrobial Activity of Chlorhexidine Hexametaphosphate Nanoparticle Coatings on Elastomeric Chains

Poor oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment with full fixed appliance most often results in formation of White Spot Lesions (WSLs) on enamel around brackets. Our goal is to coat orthodontic elastomeric chains with Chlorhexidine Hexametaphosphate (CHX-HMP) nanoparticles in vitro and evaluate the release kinetics and antibacterial effect of the released eluate on bacteria causing WSLs. The effect of such coatings on the force decay of elastomeric chains was also evaluated.

Learning Objectives:

  • Demonstrate that Chlorhexidine Hexametaphosphate nanoparticles can be coated on orthodontic elastomeric chains and exhibits a sustained release of Chlorhexidine.
  • Demonstrate that the release eluate has anti-bacterial effect on bacteria causing WSLs and the coating of nanoparticles does not have an effect on the force decay of elastomeric chains.
  • Comprehend the limitation of current findings and to explore possible future directions.
