William R. Proffit DDS, PhD

Dr. William Proffit, Emeritus Professor and formerly Kenan Distinguished Professor, Orthodontics at the University of North Carolina, was chairman of that department from 1975 to 2001. He is the author of Contemporary Orthodontics, now printed in twelve languages, with a 6th edition scheduled for publication in mid-2018, and co-author of Contemporary Treatment of Dentofacial Deformity and two other books on surgical treatment. Other publications include over 200 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and more than 50 book chapters and invited contributions. His honors include the Norton Ross award of the American Dental Association for excellence in clinical research, the Ketcham Award from the American Board of Orthodontics for contributions to orthodontics, and the AAO award for lifetime achievement in research.
