Dr. Alexandre T. Motta DDS, MS, PhD

Dr. Alexandre Motta has been exclusively practicing, teaching, and conducting research in the field of Orthodontics for 25 years. He earned his dental degree in 1997 from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and served as a dentist in the Brazilian Navy in 1998. He began his orthodontic training at the State University of Rio de Janeiro, where he completed the certification program in 2001, received his Master of Science degree in 2004, and earned his PhD in Dentistry (Orthodontics) in 2007. In 2006, Dr. Motta worked as a visiting scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill under the supervision of Dr. Lucia Cevidanes, where he conducted his PhD research on 3D-CBCT superimposition in orthognathic surgery. He is currently an Associate Professor of Orthodontics at the Federal Fluminense University in Brazil, where he served as director of the graduate program from 2012 to 2020, in the Department of Orthodontics, then headed by Dr. Jose Nelson Mucha. Dr. Motta has also maintained a private orthodontic practice in Rio de Janeiro since 2001 and became a Diplomate of the Brazilian Board of Orthodontics in 2018. He has been a speaker at four of the last five biennial meetings of the Brazilian Orthodontic Association, as well as at several regional meetings of the same association. His orthodontic-related research interests include 3D imaging and cone-beam CT, orthognathic surgery, multidisciplinary treatment, systematic reviews, and smile attractiveness. His work has resulted in over 40 publications, including 11 in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJODO). Dr. Motta received the AJODO Case Report of the Year Award in 2008 as the first author of the best case report published in 2007. His published case reports focused on orthosurgery treatment and orthodontic retreatment, highlighting excellence in finishing. He also serves as a reviewer for several orthodontic journals, including AJODO Clinical Companion, The Angle Orthodontist, Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics, PLOS ONE, Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry, Head & Face Medicine, among others.
