Mershon Lecture: New Discoveries to Improve Orthodontic Diagnosis and Treatment

We are bombarded daily with claims that new devices will “revolutionize” our clinical practice. In our rush to embrace the new machines, appliances and gizmos, we often forget that real progress in a knowledge-based field such as orthodontics is largely dependent on the advancement of our expertise and understanding, not simply the employment of hot, newly-promoted methods. This lecture will present several well-published discoveries that may not be generally known because they are not associated with new products. Significant clinical questions will be answered, such as: Why extractions? Why non-extraction for PDC and Class II/2 patients? How can we avoid permanent retention? When and how much IPR? What is a dental anomaly pattern? To master these useful evidence-based discoveries, you will not have to spend any money on new equipment.

Goal Oriented Treatment in Adult Orthodontics

Unfortunately, patients today, as well as orthodontists, are more concerned about esthetics and do not really understand or realize the importance of function as an adjunct goal. This presentation will discuss how esthetics and function go hand in hand and the importance of taking these functional goals into account for stable long-lasting results.
