Dr. Hakan Turkkahraman DDS, PhD

Dr. Hakan Turkkahraman is a full-time, Associate Professor within the Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD), Department of Orthodontics and Oral Facial Genetics and currently serves as the director of the Orthodontic Research Program and Orthodontic Fellowship Program. Dr. Turkkahraman received his bachelor (DDS, BS) and Master of Science (MS) degrees from Hacettepe University, School of Dentistry, in Turkey in 1994. He attained his PhD and orthodontic specialist degree in 2001 from Ankara University, School of Dentistry. His current research interests include integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning in orthodontic decision-making processes and craniofacial growth prediction. He is an active member of the Indiana University Indianapolis Artificial Intelligence Consortium. Dr. Turkkahraman has received numerous accolades, including the AAO Fellowship to the Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL) Academy of Academic Leadership Sponsorship Program (AALSP) and the Early Career Teaching Academy Fellowship from the IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning. His research has been recognized with the Delta Dental Award for Innovation in Oral Care Research in 2022 and 2024 and the Maynard K. Hine Award for Excellence in Dental Research in 2023. He is a member of several national and international organizations, including Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, The Board of Regents of the American College of Dentists, the American Association of Orthodontists, the World Federation of Orthodontists, and the International Association for Dental Research. Dr. Turkkahraman served as Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Dentistry for five years and currently sits on the editorial boards of several journals, including Angle Orthodontists. He has published over 80 articles in peer-reviewed journals, which have been cited more than 3,800 times.
