The practice of orthodontics has evolved significantly over the last four decades with improvements in materials, diagnostic methods, temporary anchorage devices and practice-management tools. We have also made strides in our understanding of biomechanics and biology of orthodontic tooth movement. Recent emphasis in orthodontic research and practice has been to seek ways to reduce treatment time while maintaining treatment goals. Biomechanics is still the cementing element between the current and future technological advancements. Simple and efficient biomechanics-based appliances can significantly reduce treatment time by eliminating side effects. This presentation covers some mechanics that can help achieve occlusion, function and dynamic esthetic goals developed over the last 40 years.
