2012 Joint AAO-AAPD Conference - Issues and Challenges: Posterior Crossbites in Children

This presentation will define the prevalence and presentation patterns of posterior crossbites that commonly occur in children. Discussion of the developmental and craniofacial growth factors associated with the various crossbite patterns will set the stage for treatment recommendations. Once identified as to the crossbite implications for normal development, age-appropriate biomechanical interventions will be presented with evidence and case based demonstrations to support the treatment timing and biomechanical modalities recommended for the crossbite correction in the primary, mixed, and young adolescent dentitions.

• Define the prevalence and presentation patterns of posterior crossbites that commonly present during the primary, mixed and young adolescent dentitions.
• Identify the etiologic, diagnostic and developmental factors associated with the various crossbite patterns in the developing occlusion to include the implications on normal craniofacial growth patterns.
• Present age-appropriate treatment considerations and biomechanical interventions that are most relevant to the correction of posterior crossbites in the primary, mixed and young adolescent dentitions with evidence and case-based demonstrations to support the recommended treatment modalities.
