2022 John Valentine Mershon Award Lecture; More Chin

Date
May 22, 2022

Class II orthopedics aim to increase the forward projection of the chin by stimulation of mandibular growth. It is doubtful that orthodontists can significantly increase condylar growth. Anterior displacement of the glenoid fossa by modeling changes has a minor effect on the position of the chin. True rotation of the mandible is the main mechanism behind anterior chin displacement. Forward true rotation implicates significant modeling changes in the ramus, gonial angle, and lower border of the mandible. Skeletal anchorage should be used to reduce dento-alveolar compensations and increase modeling changes.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain forward growth of the chin.
  • Use CBCT images to evaluate mandibular growth.
  • Improve the outcome of class II orthopedics.
