Alveolar Bone Dehiscence and Fenestration Following Maxillary Canine Retraction

Date
April 26, 2025

Extended orthodontic treatment durations can increase the risk of complications such as white spot lesions, periodontal disease, root resorption, and non-compliance. To accelerate tooth movement, techniques like decortication and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection have been developed. However, these methods may lead to complications such as alveolar bone dehiscence and fenestration, particularly during maxillary canine retraction. This presentation aims to address two key questions: 1) Is there a significant difference between the effects of decortication and PRP in accelerating maxillary canine retraction? and 2) Could the use of these techniques result in alveolar bone dehiscence and fenestration?

Learning Objectives

  • Evaluate the effects of decortication and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection on accelerating maxillary canine retraction.
  • Identify and compare alveolar bone dehiscence and fenestration associated with accelerated canine retraction.
