They can trick you into making fake payments, changing your paycheck direct deposit bank accounts to theirs, giving up your passwords, your personal information, and much more. There is now a whole industry of bad people working to take advantage of you online.

You can defend yourself. It's not hard. A little knowledge and desire goes a long way. As soon as it becomes evenly mildly difficult for a hacker to trick you, they will just move on and attack the next, less prepared, person.
