Through CBCT, orthodontists, for the first time, we are able to visualize the alveolar housing anatomy for an individual tooth. The alveolar housing cannot be properly visualized with standard 2D radiographs. When properly slicing CBCT scans, it becomes abundantly clear that the alveolar housing anatomy not only varies between different individuals, it can vary between different segments of the same patient's arch. In this presentation, Dr. Miller will discuss why and how the alveolar housing anatomy should be an important consideration when planning treatment for our orthodontic patients.

Learning Objectives

  • Use the alveolar housing anatomy to improve long-term orthodontic outcomes.
  • Achieve accurate visualization of the alveolar housing with proper CBCT slicing technique.
  • Evaluate how 2D radiographs and cephalometric analysis do not properly allow for the visualization and measurement of the alveolar housing.
