Orthognathic Surgery in the patient with TMJ pathology: An overview

Dr. Jay Gibson (AAO member) and Dr. Daniel Perez (AAOMS member) present Orthognathic Surgery in the patient with TMJ pathology: An overview (1.25 CE).  The temporomandibular joint is the foundation for accurate and reproducible orthognathic surgery. Patients that have temporomandibular joint pathology or degeneration are more likely to have worse function, esthetics, pain reduction and stability when performing orthognathic surgery. Simultaneous TMJ and orthognathic surgery can address problems in the joint as well as the occlusion in one operation.

If concomitant temporomandibular joint surgery is executed with orthognathic surgery (TMJ disc repositioning, discectomy, total joint reconstruction, etc.), attention needs to be paid to the orthodontic set up, planning, sequencing, and execution.

The most relevant pearls and pitfalls learned by the speakers will be discussed, including indications, contraindications, orthodontic and surgical technique, complications, and outcomes of the different procedures. The intent is to share a step-by-step presentation with the experience acquired not only during the execution of this cases but also while teaching a young novice clinician both in the orthodontic and surgical realm.
