Vertical excess, seen in patients with an anterior open bite, gummy smile, or lip incompetency, can lead to not an elongated, disproportionate facial appearance but also issues like dry mouth and periodontal problems. Total arch intrusion can effectively reduce anterior facial height, improving facial esthetics, correcting gummy smiles, and promoting lip closure, resulting in a more natural lip contour. This technique also contributes to enhanced periodontal health. Treatment must be customized for each malocclusion type. Total arch intrusion, which induces counterclockwise rotation of the mandible, is particularly advantageous for correcting Class II malocclusions, although it presents challenges in Class III cases. Furthermore, the distalization effect inherent in miniscrew-supported intrusion makes treatments requiring backward tooth movement more feasible than those needing forward movement. This presentation will feature a variety of cases, showcasing the use of vertical control in treating long face syndrome, lip incompetence, gummy smiles, and gingival recession. The focus will be on demonstrating tailored approaches for different malocclusion types, with an emphasis on enhancing both esthetic and functional outcomes.
Learning Objectives
Develop individualized treatment plans for vertical control, tailored to specific malocclusion types, improving both facial esthetics and oral health.
Apply orthodontic miniscrews to manage vertical control in patients with long face syndrome, enhancing facial harmony and functional outcomes.
Improve periodontal health by addressing vertical excess, reducing gingival recession risk, and promoting better oral health.
