Treating Patients from LGBTQ+ Backgrounds in Orthodontic Offices: Status quo considerations and discussion of best practices

Treating Patients from LGBTQ+ Backgrounds in Orthodontic Offices: Status quo considerations and discussion of best practices

Credits: None available.

Join Dr. Inglehart for Orthodontists and Their Patients from LGBTQ+ Backgrounds: Status quo Considerations and Future Needs (1.0 CE). In 2016, a national survey of dental school and dental hygiene program administrators reported that a large percentage of programs did not educate their students about treating patients from LGBTQ+ backgrounds. Recent surveys also showed that practitioners did not consider that they were well educated about these topics.

Yet surveys indicate that a significant percentages of practitioners report that they have patients who self identify as Lesbian, Gay or Bisexual (LGB) or as transgender (T) as well as patients on puberty blockers or receiving gender affirming care. These findings raise the question what dental care providers and their staff should know about the oral health, risk factors for poor oral health and oral healthcare utilization of patients from LGBTQ+ backgrounds to become well equipped to provide optimal care for these patients. This informative session is being provided to assist orthodontists and staff to help provide better overall care for all patients.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to define the terms LGBTQ+
  • Learn what puberty blockers are, when they are indicated and long term consequences
  • Be able to identify risk factors for poor oral health of patients who self identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community
  • What accommodations are needed to provide a welcoming environment for all patients and parents

2022 AAO Annual Session - Utilizing 3D Printers to Improve Practice Efficiency & the Patient Experience

2022 AAO Annual Session - Utilizing 3D Printers to Improve Practice Efficiency & the Patient Experience

3D printer technology is now commonplace. The addition of additive manufacturing within the orthodontic practice can reduce the expense of providing aligner treatment as well as reduce turn around times for aligner delivery. Being able to provide immediate response to tracking issues as well as patients with a moving target greatly improves the overall patient experience.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand additive manufacturing (3D printing).
  • Evaluate the requirements for beginning 3D printing in your office.
  • Outline the benefits and shortcomings of in-office aligner production.

2022 AAO Annual Session - Virtual Orthodontic Visits are Here to Stay!

2022 AAO Annual Session - Virtual Orthodontic Visits are Here to Stay!

Credits: None available.

I used to feel that virtual orthodontic consults were simply a tool for quality orthodontic offices to provide potential patients with the convenient options they are requesting, and possibly engage these patients before they choose direct to consumer treatment — a marketing concept that has been working successfully in my practice for quite some time. However, an unprecedented global pandemic changed everything. We were forced to develop a complete virtual treatment platform to ensure that we could continue to manage our patients’ treatment during mandated closure of our physical office. We made the decision to be virtually open to serve our patients even though our offices were physically closed. And serendipitously, my team and I learned a lot about the potential for virtual visits to enhance (not replace) our in-office patient experience to help us deliver quality orthodontic care in an effective, efficient, and convenient manner — a mindset change that is here to stay!

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the concept of virtual orthodontic consultations as a tool for quality orthodontic offices to provide the convenience that some patients are craving in order to engage them before they choose direct to consumer options (Pre-Pandemic Mindset).
  • Explain in detail our Virtual Treatment Platform that was developed in order to manage our patients’ treatment during mandated closure of our physical office (Pandemic Mindset).
  • Explore what this forced workflow change has taught us about the perceptions and logistics of virtual visits, and how we have successfully utilized them to improve our practice — a serendipitous change that is here to stay! (Post-Pandemic Mindset).

Can't We All Just Get Along?

Can't We All Just Get Along?

Credits: None available.

Ever wonder ... "How come everyone doesn't think the same way I do?  Or, why parents just don't listen to what I'm telling them? Or, how can my team member not do that task the same way I do?"  Join Amy Demas, MBA, DTM, DFSS when she presents Can't We All Just Get Along, Thursday, April 14, 12 - 1:00 pm Central Time (1.0 CE).

Our last 2 years have been challenging, to say the least. And as time has gone on, our patience has worn thin, our safety measures have changed a multitude of times, our patients are beyond frustrated with the fun activities that have been canceled over time. And when that happens, we can be left wondering why we can’t all just get along.

We work in a great industry but sometimes we need a little help with some specific strategies when conversations feel like they are getting tough. Those tricky situations can be with patients, their parents, or (gasp) even our teammates. We can be left wondering, “What just happened?”

Sign up today to gain insights and script templates to help you be a more effective communicator at work and in your personal life!

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn about personalities, what they want, and how to best communicate with each type of personality to foster relationship and cooperation.
  • Gain knowledge in scheduling appointments effectively with repeatable techniques.
  • Understand how to communicate with our patients and parents using a universal language regarding orthodontic outcomes and needed compliance.
  • Obtain strategies in handling upset parents.

2015 AAO Annual Session - Advanced Esthetics: Raising the Bar
