Don’t Make the Same Mistake I Did: MARPE Complication

Despite the attention that mini-screw assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) technique has garnered since its development, there exists little data regarding the complications that arise with the use of MARPE. In this lecture, our retrospective analysis of the complications associated with mini-screw assisted rapid palatal expansion will be reviewed. Also, the advantages/disadvantages of each MARPE design and technique will be discussed, and how to troubleshoot and manage each complication will be suggested. The goals of this presentation would be to guide the orthodontist in selecting the best MARPE option for individual cases and proper treatment plan to avoid clinical complications. Armed with this knowledge, clinicians can better advise their patients regarding the risks and benefits of this treatment modality.
