Dr. Shelgikar is a clinical assistant professor of neurology at the University of Michigan, where she serves as program director for the ACGME-approved sleep medicine fellowship, one of the largest in the country. Dr. Shelgikar has a Master’s degree and long-standing focus on medical education, and particularly competency-based education and assessment, along with curriculum design and evaluation. Within the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, Dr. Shelgikar was elected as a member (2012) and later chair (2014–2016) of the Sleep Medicine Fellowship Directors Council Steering Committee, AASM Education Committee and the Fellowship Models Exploratory Committee, and served as the vice-chair for the Innovative Fellowship Model Implementation Presidential Committee. She was elected to the AASM Board of Directors in 2018.
