We will delve into the etiology of a gummy smile – starting at infancy and early childhood. We will investigate contributing factors and compensations that occur over one’s life that lead to the development of a gummy smile. Once established, we will also discuss inherent compensations that patients make because of their particular growth pattern and the potential deterioration that can occur.

Finally, we will consider treatment options for gummy smile patients of all ages. We will explore treatment options for early childhood, adolescents and teens, and adults.

Bone Anchored Maxillary Protraction: Where are We Now?

Dr. Marie Cornelis and Dr. Lucia Cevidanes present on Bone Anchored Maxillary Protraction: Where are We Now? In the last decade, growing patients with Class III malocclusion have been increasingly treated with bone-anchored maxillary protraction. Several protocols have been described, which can be divided into two categories: 1) intermaxillary elastics engaged on skeletal anchorage devices and on a facemask, with miniplates only in the maxilla and 2) class III elastics engaged between skeletal anchorage in both maxilla and mandible, without the use of a facemask. The lecture will detail the different protocols used, and focus on the evidence available, comparing the clinical outcomes obtained with bone anchored maxillary protraction, with and without facemask. New protocols using CAD/CAM technology will be introduced.

  • Know the effects, side effects and limitations of Bone Anchored Maxillary Protraction according to the available evidence.
