Controversies in Surgery: Three Ways to Improve Treatment Planning
Treatment of complex orthodontic cases should be based on information from 3D diagnosis, surgical simulation and assessment of treatment outcomes, from clinical trials if possible, but always from a series of consecutively treated patients. Diagnosis of facial asymmetry with quantification of right and left differences, as well as planning of possible surgical procedures in 3D, are particularly challenging. Superimposition of CBCTs on stable structures of reference now allows assessment of 3D dental, skeletal and soft-tissue changes for both growing and non-growing patients. 3D findings reveal more variability in post-surgical stability than previously reported in 2D studies.
