The physiological response of the Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics (PAOO) procedure will be discussed along with the many benefits of this treatment modality. These include greater range of movement, greater periodontal support for the teeth, and of course much shorter treatment times. Fewer extractions are required while achieving improved facial aesthetics and increased long-term stability. The greatest benefit with the PAOO procedure is the creation of new bone surrounding the roots of teeth in the direction of movement. It can also cover pre-existing bone loss in certain situations. A thorough understanding of various types of orthodontically induced bone response is important in choosing the correct treatment plan for each patient. A range of treatments will be discussed including difficult situations and exposure cases.
Learning Objectives:
Learn the biological principles of the Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics procedure and their relevance to rapid and conventional orthodontic treatments
Understand how treatment with the PAOO procedure is possible with fewer extractions but improved results
Discuss the increased scope of orthodontic treatment with decortication and bone grafting
