Correction of Anterior Open Bite Using Intraoral Spurs to Modify Tongue Posture: Long-term Stability

The high relapse incidence of anterior open-bite malocclusion is frequently due to an anterior tongue rest posture. A maxillary fixed intraoral appliance with spurs is recommended to modify tongue posture. Orthodontic brackets are not required to close the open bite since it closes autonomously through incisor eruption. The spur appliance can be used simultaneously with brackets, if they are needed to align teeth or to close extraction spaces. Research with the spur appliance in a large sample of anterior open bite patients demonstrated long-term stability. Clinical cases are presented.

Correction of Vertical Problems Using Orthodontic Mini-screws

This presentation will present the rationale and biomechanics for the correction of the vertical problems with mini-screws. By using mini-screw implants, it is possible to produce 3-dimensional movements of the teeth without the patient’s compliance or side effects. Many modifications can be made in the appliance design, and clinical tips will be introduced according to the required situations. Clinical cases treated with the vertical movement of the teeth for the correction of the vertical problems will be presented, and biomechanical considerations will be described.
