Mershon Lecture: Target Approach to Treatment Planning

Efficient orthodontic treatment depends largely on a careful diagnosis and a thoughtful biomechanical design. Once the problem is identified, the clinician can point to a group of teeth that will require the most movement. Choose these teeth or tooth as a target and plan a system that is safe, comfortable, esthetic and effective. Once the primary target is addressed, the remaining treatment can follow a more standard protocol. Temporary Skeletal Anchorage Devices (TSAD) have enabled many more options for biomechanics systems. This presentation reviews systems currently in use at UCSF.

Salzmann Lecture: Craniofacial Team Care - The Orthodontist's Roles

Dr. Vargervik will present an overview of current craniofacial team care and some of the research and experiences on which it is built. On the cleft lip and palate/craniofacial team, the craniofacial orthodontist serves several functions: educator, diagnostician, record keeper, short- and long-term treatment planner, treatment coordinator, liaison with community orthodontists and other specialists, provider of orthodontic treatment and sometimes the team leader. These roles will be discussed as well as new international challenges to help build treatment centers in severely underserved parts of the world.

• Recognize the complexity of the structural and functional problems that an individual with a craniofacial condition presents to the family, society and the management team
• Recognize craniofacial conditions that require referral to a craniofacial treatment center
• Identify areas where you may contribute to improving access or quality of care for the child with a cleft lip and palate or other craniofacial anomaly
