Skeletal Anchors: Intraalveolar or Extraalveolar, and Does it Matter?
Skeletal anchors (SA) are firmly established in the clinical practice of orthodontics. While intraalveolar SA have been used extensively, one major advantage of extraalveolar SA is the possibility of enmasse movements without the anchor interfering and being in the path of tooth movement. Failure rates of SA and the ability to provide anchorage for different dental and skeletal orthodontic applications vary widely between intra and extra alveolar SA and will be the focus for this lecture.

Identify factors in the bone physiology that relate to failure of intraalveolar and extraalveolar SA
Assist clinicians in understanding choices of SA
Emerging Applications of TADs
TADs have become even more widespread as orthodontists have begun to use TADs in more cases for anchorage and to achieve different types of mechanics such as expansion and accelerated tooth movement. New developments involving TADs across various orthodontic applications have enabled orthodontists to offer their patients more efficient treatment options. However, many clinicians have encountered limitations of TADs, including damage to tooth structures and frequent TAD failure. In this presentation, novel designs for TADs that aim to circumvent some of the most common clinical challenges will be introduced and new applications for TADs will be discussed.
