White Spots Matter
This lecture will focus on the occurrence, etiology and clinical significance of White Spot Lesions (WSLs) in patients undergoing active orthodontic treatment. New data on the prevalence of WSLs, both in private practice and university clinics, will be presented. The various potential etiologies and risk factors will also be described, and methods of prevention currently available to the practitioner will be reviewed. Specific informed consent prior to initiation of orthodontic treatment will be recommended. The potential medicolegal sequelae of these unsightly permanent scars and the future costs of restorative care will be emphasized to show that ‘White Spots really do Matter”!
