A proper condylar position and stability of TMJs are essential for successful orthodontic treatment. When a patient shows unstable TMJs, the use of a stabilization splint is needed before starting orthodontic tooth movement. The stabilization splint constructed with even occlusal contacts in centric relation and precise anterior ramp can be effective on stabilization of TMJs. However, evaluating the mandibular stability and fabricating precise splints are not an easy process. The digital transformation in mandibular stabilization process can give us considerable benefits.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize the necessity of the concept of mandibular stabilization before starting orthodontic treatment in patients with TMDs.
  • Define the essential shape and structural factors of stabilization splints.
  • Understand the process of virtual face-bow transfer and virtual articulator mounting.
