In the past 24 months there have been some large-scale cyber-attacks specifically targeting healthcare providers. In one instance, over 400 dental practices got hacked and ransomwared over the same weekend. The hackers know about HIPAA and are stealing bits of your patient data and threatening to auction them off on public websites since they know this would create an even more massive HIPAA breach for you – thus increasing the pressure for you to pay the ransom. In a twisted sense – brilliant.
