Applying Science to Aligner Mechanics and Design

Date
June 25, 2021

As aligners have increased in use for orthodontic tooth movement, clinicians have made decisions about how to plan tooth movement based primarily on their own experience, or the experience of others. This presentation will add science to the equation in order to help the clinician understand how differences in aligner trim margin and material selection may impact the forces and moments delivered to teeth. Novel research will be shared that will help practitioners make evidence-based decisions about aligner fabrication to optimized clinical care and efficiency.

Learning Objectives:

  • Better understand the current state of knowledge regarding the biomechanics of aligner tooth movement.
  • Appreciate the impact of the aligner trim design on the delivery of force to the tooth.
  • Improve your aligner design strategies to maximize efficiency of tooth movement.
