The orthodontic treatment of tooth eruption disorders can be a great challenge to even the experienced orthodontist. This clinical presentation will focus on the diagnosis of the eruption disorder and the development of a treatment plan for the specific problem. It is important to understand the difference between tooth eruption and tooth emergence, as well as the complex biologic principles of tooth eruption and tooth movement. Several clinical cases will be presented including delayed tooth eruption, maxillary canine impaction, maxillary canine first premolar transposition, mechanical failure of eruption of a mandibular first molar, and transmigration of a mandibular canine.

Learning Objectives

  • Outline the difference between chronologic delayed tooth eruption and primary failure of eruption, and some differences in the biologic principles of tooth eruption and orthodontic tooth movement.
  • Bbetter diagnose the tooth eruption disorder and develop a realistic treatment plan for the different types of tooth eruption disorders.
  • Apply basic biomechanical principles to correct impacted teeth, with and without skeletal anchorage, and will understand when it is irrational to treat certain impacted teeth.
