Orthodontists may have various reasons for using fixed appliances compared to aligners, like better occlusal results, less compliance, and more control in extraction patients. However, one common sequela of fixed appliances are white spot lesions, and some literature suggests that aligners might be associated with less white spot formation during treatment. Dr. Huang will review the existing evidence, and also report on a recent study that compared white spot lesions after treatment in adolescent patients treated with fixed appliances versus aligners. If aligners are associated with less white spots, it would be a significant advantage of that treatment modality.
