How to Perform Successful Tooth Transplantation? Key Factors for Donor Selection, Surgery and Follow-up

Tooth transplantation, especially in growing patients, is an attractive alternative, for treating dental agenesis, upper incisor avulsions and tooth impactions. Successful transplants not only provide a life-long tooth replacement but can also preserve the alveolar bone and promote bone regeneration in deficient alveolar processes. Tooth transplantation is a technique sensitive procedure and requires careful diagnosis and case selection, a good understanding of relevant tooth transplantation biological principles and careful execution of the optimal surgical and follow-up protocols. The protocol for autotransplantation of developing teeth introduced at the University in Oslo in the early 60’s has been successfully implemented in Poland for the last 19 years. The concepts will be presented using relevant clinical examples and they will be supported by relevant scientific evidence. The key issues of patient’s communication regarding age and predictability of this procedure will be also presented.
