TMD & Bruxism: Implication for Orthodontists
Date
April 26, 2025
The relationship between occlusion and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) represents one of the major controversies in the scientific literature. It has been suggested that clear aligners might be a treatment choice for patients with sleep bruxism. However, no effects on sleep bruxism activity has been reported. Care should be taken while prescribing invisible orthodontic devices in patients who are at potential risk of developing jaw muscle pain. Patients’ individual adaptability must be considered by clinicians to prevent iatrogenic maladaptive behaviors.
Learning Objectives
Understand risk factors, diagnosis and management of TMDs.
Understand diagnosis of awake bruxism and sleep bruxism and their management.
Analyze the interaction between TMD bruxism and orthodontic treatment.
