3-D Morphological Facial Analysis and Surgical Simulation using 3dMD
What constitutes a "normal" face? What constitutes a "beautiful" face? What are the differences in the proportional 3-D geometry of "normal" vs "abnormal" vs "beautiful" vs "extraordinary"? Analysis of accurate 3-D facial imaging along with conebeam CT (CBCT) may begin to give us the rich 3-D data we need to begin evaluating these areas more accurately and completely. "3-D simulation" of facial changes from various treatments (i.e. surgery, early growth guidance, palatal expansion, treatment of asymmetry, etc) may help us develop a 3-D Problem List upon which to analyze different 3-D treatment plans and determine which may be "the best" from a more evidence-based approach (3-D analysis of data), along with our clinical and professional experience and knowledge. The clinical exam and consultation with the patient may also lead to "a compromised treatment plan", which still may satisfy the patient's chief concerns but could be analyzed before any treatment is rendered for comparison. A "simulation of treatment" is NOT a prediction of outcomes, only a "best guess" from the information we have and the knowledge of the doctor. Dr. Harrell will show 3-D facial and CBCT records of patients (surgical and orthodontic) and various treatment options that may be considered for these patients.

Selecting Orthognathic Procedures to Maximize Esthetic Results
Studies have reported that in a sample of patients considering orthognathic surgery, a large majority rated psychosocial motives such as the desire to improve their appearance, to enhance self-confidence and to improve social interactions as primary motivating factors in their decision to undergo treatment. Selection of the appropriate orthognathic procedure(s) and management of soft tissue and presurgical tooth position will, in large part, dictate the final esthetic outcome. This presentation will point out the advantages and limitations of various orthognathic procedures with particular emphasis on their impact on facial balance and esthetics.
