Join Dr. Inglehart for Orthodontists and Their Patients from LGBTQ+ Backgrounds: Status quo Considerations and Future Needs (1.0 CE). In 2016, a national survey of dental school and dental hygiene program administrators reported that a large percentage of programs did not educate their students about treating patients from LGBTQ+ backgrounds. Recent surveys also showed that practitioners did not consider that they were well educated about these topics.
Yet surveys indicate that a significant percentages of practitioners report that they have patients who self identify as Lesbian, Gay or Bisexual (LGB) or as transgender (T) as well as patients on puberty blockers or receiving gender affirming care. These findings raise the question what dental care providers and their staff should know about the oral health, risk factors for poor oral health and oral healthcare utilization of patients from LGBTQ+ backgrounds to become well equipped to provide optimal care for these patients. This informative session is being provided to assist orthodontists and staff to help provide better overall care for all patients.

Ever wonder ... "How come everyone doesn't think the same way I do? Or, why parents just don't listen to what I'm telling them? Or, how can my team member not do that task the same way I do?" Join Amy Demas, MBA, DTM, DFSS when she presents Can't We All Just Get Along, Thursday, April 14, 12 - 1:00 pm Central Time (1.0 CE).
Our last 2 years have been challenging, to say the least. And as time has gone on, our patience has worn thin, our safety measures have changed a multitude of times, our patients are beyond frustrated with the fun activities that have been canceled over time. And when that happens, we can be left wondering why we can’t all just get along.
We work in a great industry but sometimes we need a little help with some specific strategies when conversations feel like they are getting tough. Those tricky situations can be with patients, their parents, or (gasp) even our teammates. We can be left wondering, “What just happened?”

The management of missing teeth presents some challenges to the orthodontist. Upper lateral incisors and second premolars are commonly missing, and decisions need to be made on whether to close spaces or open spaces for prosthetic replacement. Maintenance of spaces in growing individuals then needs to be considered. This presentation will be a highly clinical lecture with a review of the main issues facing an orthodontist in treatment planning of missing teeth.

Orthodontic treatment is now more than straightening teeth. Patients are increasingly aware of the impact of orthodontic treatment on facial appearance. In addition, patients are increasingly aware how the shape and color of their teeth affect their smile characteristics. This lecture will address methods beyond simply straightening teeth that are at the orthodontist’s disposal to correct many of the features that affect the patient’s final smile dynamics.
