Mechanical Strategies to Improve Open Bite Treatment Stability

This presentation will describe the treatment approaches of open bite in the different maturational stages, their respective expected clinical stability and the mechanical strategies that can be used to increase stability in the long-term.

Surgical Correction of Anterior Open Bite With Mandibular Counterclockwise Rotation

Historically, open bite closure through surgical counterclockwise rotation of the mandible and intermaxillary wire fixation was discontinued due to the high degree of instability associated with this technique. Instead, correction of open bite deformities with maxillary surgical impaction became the standard of care. Currently, the development of rigid internal fixation has allowed clinicians to again close anterior open bite discrepancies in the mandible with bilateral split osteotomies and counterclockwise rotation of the distal segment.
