Dr. Sylvia A. Frazier-Bowers DDS, PhD

Dr. Sylvia Frazier-Bowers completed her dental education at the University of Illinois at Chicago and went on to complete a combined orthodontics residency and PhD program in genetics and molecular biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH). She spent a short time in Houston, Texas as a postdoctoral fellow and faculty in Orthodontics, before returning to UNC Chapel Hill as an Assistant Professor in Orthodontics. She recently joined the faculty of Indiana University School of Dentistry as a tenured Professor of Orthodontics, where she also serves as an Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Admissions, and Chief Diversity Officer. The crux of her translational research program inspires a paradigm shift in orthodontics from "how to move teeth, to how teeth move." She studies focus on the genetics of inherited tooth disorders but has also been published widely on the genetic basis of Class III malocclusion and tooth agenesis. Her past academic roles include teaching at the graduate and pre-doctoral levels and mentoring students in research projects. She also maintains a strong link to the national and international craniofacial community in service and leadership as past president and Councilor for the IADR Craniofacial Biology Research Group (CBG); past Chair of the AAO Council on Scientific Affairs; Past SAO Scientific Affairs Committee member; current Vice-Chair of the AAOF Planning and Research Board and member of the Consortium on Orthodontic Advances in Science and Technology Advisory Board.
